‘Porridge!’ I hear you all say.
Well, apart from porridge of course…Oat Cookies!
This week the children in the Burrow have taken their 3 Bears story to another level by making tea for the bears. This has involved small groups of children working together to follow a recipe. Something that has been talked about before during their ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’ story.
Establishing what the ingredients are involved the children using their senses to look, touch and smell lovely things like goats butter, wholemeal flour, apple concentrate, vanilla and oats.
Next the children had to decide how much of everything was needed. This involved them using my kitchen scales and looking carefully at the dial on the front to check if they had enough, too much or not enough. The children concentrated well and demonstrated great skill when pouring or scooping ingredients into the very big bowl.
The children used their strong arms to mix the butter, apple concentrate and vanilla together until it was smooth and creamy. The next step was to mix in the flour. This was hard work and the children noticed how the mixture changed from being smooth and creamy to rather dry and floury. With a bit of muscle power from one of the adults and a wooden spoon the ingredients were blended together to make a firm cookie dough.
Each child had their own portion of dough to then roll in oats and shape to their own design. This was great fun and many individual creations were made.
Off to Val in the kitchen to cook for 15 minutes.
Decision time for the 3 Bears…
Are the cookies too hot!
Or hopefully just right!
